Chapter

Fifteen

J anice’s eyebrows were pinched together as she massaged her temples with her finger. “Thanks for coming over so quickly,” she said when I walked in. “I knew you would be the only person who would understand.” She told me she was by herself in the clinic. Doctor Mason, who usually filled in for Michael now and then, couldn’t come in and help out, so Janice had spent the morning and previous evening rescheduling the day’s appointments. She asked me to follow her into the clinic’s storage room, where she pointed out a padlock on one of the storage cabinets. “This is how the lock was when I came in today,” she said, pointing at the open padlock dangling on the cupboard. “Michael always makes triple sure this cupboard is locked at the end of every day.”

“I’m going to go out on a limb here,” I said. “This is where you keep the barbiturates.”

“It is,” she replied.

To most people, the open lock might have seemed insignificant, a simple oversight after a hard day at work. I understood why Janice thought I was the only one who would understand. There was no way Michael would have been so careless. When we were dating, I used to tease him about his obsessive need to check, double-check, and triple-check his locker to ensure the door was always secure and locked. People don’t lose that sort of habit as they get older.

Janice told me Michael called her after he got home from jail to ask how everything was going. “I told him I was able to reschedule all the week’s appointments for next week,” she said. “I reminded him he’d been through a lot and, unless there was an emergency here, it would be a good idea for him to rest for a couple days.”

“And he agreed to that?” I asked.

Janice laughed. “Hard to believe, isn’t it? He must have been pretty tired because he said that was a good idea.”

“Could it have been Dr. Mason who left the cabinet unlocked?” I asked.

Janice shook her head. “He came in a few days ago to take care of a couple of appointments,” she replied. “But he hasn’t been back since. I’m the only one who’s been here for the past couple days.”

“Who else knows what’s in the cabinet?” I asked.

Her lips tightened as she thought. “Besides Michael and me, there’s the intern from the college. Cassandra’s her name. Any of the interns we’ve had in the past would probably know. Of course, Doctor Mason does.”

I asked Janice if she could write down the names of the former interns and email them to me. It was a long shot, but I didn’t want to leave any stone unturned when it came to proving Michael’s innocence. I looked around the room and saw a security camera in the corner. “Do you have the footage from that camera?” I asked.

Her face turned red, and she chuckled nervously. “That camera hasn’t worked in three or four years,” she said.
